PROHESION, MODIFIED SALT SPRAY TEST, ASTM G85-ANNEX A5

ASTM G-85 is a corrosion standard that establishes a number of methods for modified salt spray testing. These variations described in the standard are useful when a different or more corrosive environment than the salt spray described in ASTM B117 tests is desired. This method is applicable to both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as organic and inorganic coatings.

Within this standard, Annex A5 establishes test criteria based on stages of slightly acidified salt spray, followed by exposure to drying at a temperature above the test temperature by inlet of fresh, unsaturated air. These conditions have to be taken into account when designing the chamber, since this second stage requires a modification of a standard salt spray.

The SSC salt spray chamber models can have this test in their configuration by means of a design and programming modification, and this test can be carried out as an option of the standard configuration in any of the models offered.

ISO 6270-2, DETERMINATION OF RESISTANCE TO CONDENSATION IN PAINTS AND VARNISHES

ISO 6270-2 (Determination of resistance to humidity. Part 2: Procedure for exposing test specimens in condensation-water atmospheres) establishes conditions and procedures for the conditioning of samples in order to evaluate the behaviour and defects that can develop when samples are subjected to high humidity environments. This test establishes 3 different types of atmospheres: CH – Condensing atmosphere with constant humidity; AHT – Condensing atmosphere with alternating humidity and air temperature; AT – Condensing atmosphere with alternating air temperature.

Normally, condensing chambers are presented in a vertical format with a capacity of approximately 300 litres, but… What happens when we want to test large parts? In this case, Dycometal’s solution is the condensing chamber in horizontal format with a large width dimension in order to be able to introduce the largest samples. This horizontal design allows several samples to be positioned in parallel for testing. Volumes of 1000 or 2000 litres provide more than enough capacity to accommodate large specimen lengths.

CYCLIC CORROSION CHAMBER FOR COMPLIANCE WITH ISO 11997-1 – PAINTS AND VARNISHES, SSCK

ISO 11997-1 (Determination of resistance to cyclic corrosion conditions) describes the method for the determination of the resistance of coatings to one of the 4 defined cycles under humidity (salt spray)/dryness/humidity conditions using specific solutions. This method is used to compare the resistance of different coatings to cyclic salt spray exposure. It is most commonly used to provide a rating scale for a series of painted specimens that show significant differences in resistance to cyclic salt spray exposure. This standard has different types of cycles: A: based on Japanese standards, B: based on VDA 621-415 used in Europe, C: developed in the UK for water soluble paints or latex paint, D: based on Japanese standards.

Our SSCK cyclic corrosion models have been developed for compliance with this standard in any of its cycles. With 5 different volumes, they can be adapted to the space requirements of customers and their programmer with associated software will allow the test to be recorded and a full report to be produced.

SSC-2000 NG, SALT SPRAY CHAMBER. CORROSION TESTS FOR DEFENCE INDUSTRY

A reference standard within the environmental tests applied in defence is MIL STD-810, which is a guide on the different environmental tests necessary to apply depending on the type of sample. And within this standard, there is a section referring to corrosion tests in a saline atmosphere. This type of test is carried out in chambers known as salt spray chambers. The samples to be tested can be large batches or large sizes. Our model SSC-2000 NG is the ideal model when a large working space is required.

The SSC-2000 NG has an actual volumetric capacity of 2000 litres, with internal dimensions of 1000 x 2000 x 1000 (H x W x D), with a reinforced floor capable of supporting large batches of samples or heavy samples. The equipment is supplied with support bars to place or hang the samples and a floor protection against impacts. Control is via a colour touch screen with data logging and export capability.

Our SSC- Salt Spray Chambers are one of the most demanded products by our customers, being the SSC-400 NG one of the most sold products thanks to its aesthetics. From Dycometal we have made both aesthetic and technical adjustments in our star model, SSC-400 NG.

KESTERNICH CORROSION TEST CHAMBERS

The DIN 50 018 standard establishes the conditions for the Kesternich Corrosion Test. This test is designed to simulate industrial or urban atmospheres by forming an artificial atmosphere by adding sulphur dioxide to the air, with or without carbon dioxide. With the Kesternich Test an artificial atmosphere is obtained with the maximum approximation to the results obtained when metals are exposed in natural sulphurous atmospheres.

CYCLICAL CORROSION TEST CHAMBER FOR VDA 233-102, SSCK-400

One of the most demanding standards in the field of cyclic corrosion is VDA 233-102, which has 3 different test cycles (A, B and C). This standard has the peculiarity of having to perform a freezing cycle at -15 潞C, a demanding condition for a standard cyclic corrosion tester.

WALK-IN SALT SPRAY CHAMBER, Model: SSC-7730m


The salt spray chambers allow evaluating the behaviour of materials and coatings against corrosion. It is not a simulation test, but a quality study test against a humid atmosphere with a specific concentration of NaCl. When the pieces are too large or too heavy for a standard salt spray chamber, the best option is a large-volume salt spray or walk-in chamber, which will allow the samples to be entered comfortably.

The SSC-7730m Walk-in Salt Spray Chamber has been designed for large part sizes and weight. The special plastic coating that presents the interior of the chamber, allows protecting the chamber from the corrosive agents that will be generated during the test. The door allows the passage of the pieces inside the chamber without any difficulty of access to the interior of the chamber. In addition, the roof of the chamber is made at an angle so that water droplets do not fall on the sample, according to the norm. Several salt spray nozzles are positioned on the sides of the chamber so that the salt spray is evenly distributed inside the chamber .

PRODUCT BULLETIN: WALK-IN Humidostatic Chamber for Corrosion Tests

The corrosion tests by condensation are oriented to know the behavior of the samples under conditions of high humidity and high temperature, checking if there is some type of defect in the protection facing an accelerated study. The most common standards are: ISO-6270-2 and ASTM D2247, BS 3900,… The typical humidostatic chambers are small to do test to a big samples like some automotive components, so it’s is necessary to do the test in a bigger chamber, walk-in chamber. 

CHMD-7436 is a humidostatic chamber prepared for the big samples.  Reinforced floor allows introduce heavy samples, and the walk-in configurations facilitates the placement of the samples (big or smaller). Dycometal offers a customized solution for this kind of chambers.

GM 4465, General Motors, Humidity Test

The most manufacturers have their own testing standards In the automobile sector. This is one example of it, the GM 4465 standard from General Motors. 

To comply this test, the samples will be exposured to a water fog, with a fallout rate between 1 and 2 ml/80cm2/hour. The temperature of the cabinet will be +38潞C and the relative humidty will be 100% RH, These conditions must remain constant during the cycle.

ASTM D2247, WATER-RESISTANT 100% RH

This standard is used in order to test the water resistance of coatings using treated specimen to a high humidity and high temperature exposure, until condensation on the elements to be tested.

It will create an atmosphere consisting of a heated mixture of saturated air and water vapor. The temperature is 38°C and a relative humidity of 100%. This environment is kept in steady state conditions until you go producing condensation in samples. You will be subsequently evaluated the piece being tested.

ASTM D1735, WATER RESISTANCE

This type of test is intended for the analysis of coatings and its resistance to corrosion from exposure to water, at high temperatures.  

The samples will be exposed to a water fog. The temperature of the chamber is 38潞C, and the fallout rate between 1,5 y 3 ml/80 cm2/ hora. Time of test would be variable.

UNE-EN-60068-2-52, Cyclical corrosion test

The purpose of this test is to determine the capacity of the equipment to be stored or used under conditions of high humidity combined with high salinity conditions.

The purpose of this test is to determine the capacity of the equipment to be stored or used under conditions of salinity, followed by high humidity and high temperature

The sample will be tested in a neutral salinity atmosphere (pH 6,5 -7,2), with a fallout rate between 1 and 2 ml/80cm2/hour, the temperature could be from +15潞C to +35潞C. After this point, the sample will be tested during 7 days at high humidity (93 %RH) and at +40潞C.
